When you put the studs on it, do you take off the backs and reattach to the stud after you've poked the stud through the material (if that makes any sense) or can the back and the stud get pushed through the material and stay?

Good question! I just took the backs off the studs and then reattached them once the earrings were through. The backs I have are these huge metal ones that would never fit through the gaps in the fabric.

There are some cross-stitch fabrics with pretty loose weaves (so the holes in the fabric are bigger), and there are some studs with really small backs, like the tiny plastic ones, but if the backs are big enough to fit through the holes in the fabric… then the studs might fall right back out again. It takes a little more work, but I think just reattaching the backs after poking the studs through is the best way to go.
